What is the MLH Fellowship?
The MLH Fellowship is a 12-week remote internship alternative where student developers contribute to open-source software and build technical skills under guidance from industry mentors. Fellows receive a stipend of $5,000–$15,000.
Tracks Available
- Open Source (contribute to existing OSS projects)
- Explorer (build your own portfolio project)
- Production Engineering (SRE/DevOps focus)
Application Requirements
- Enrolled student or recent graduate (<2 years)
- GitHub profile with at least 3–5 projects
- Resume with relevant projects and skills
- Video introduction (1–2 minutes)
- Coding challenge (algorithmic + practical)
Tips to Get Accepted
- Apply early (applications open 3–4 months before cohort start)
- Contribute to open source before applying to show initiative
- Be specific about why you want the Open Source track
- Practice LeetCode medium-level problems for the coding challenge
- Get your GitHub profile reviewed by a mentor or senior dev
